Ash Wednesday
We celebrated Ash Wednesday on the 14th February this year. The whole school took part in a special mass to mark the beginning of the Lenten season.
Ash Wednesday is a very important day in our liturgical calendar as it opens Lent, a time of fasting and prayer. Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday. The ashes marked on the forehead symbolise the dust from which God made us. The wearing of the ashes are also viewed as a symbol of penance.
It was wonderful to be able to take part in the mass as a whole community, with many members of the parish, as well as our school families, joining us for the morning.
Founders Day Mass
Our St. John's Founders Day Mass was a great success. We give thanks to all the school families and staff who attended, as we acknowledged founding members of our Parish in Mitcham. Our school leaders presented their speeches about one of our founders, Gladys McLachlan, after interviewing her with several questions about her fondest memories and contributions to our Parish. Gladys was so humble and gracious being interviewed, sharing that one of the main reasons she moved with her family to Mitcham was because of the strong Parish and School, where she could remain connected to her faith. The Parish community was and still is important to Gladys because of the friendships that she has made.
We are very proud of all that Gladys has contributed to our School and Parish community over the past 67 years and recognise her as an outstanding Founding member of our St John’s parish community.
